The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) decided today to register Paraty and Ilha Grande, in the south of the State of Rio de Janeiro, as a world heritage site of humanity. The site includes the historic center of Paraty and Ilha Grande. This is the first mixed heritage site in Brazil,that includes cultural and natural assets. Of the more than one thousand world heritages, only 39 sites in 31 countries are mixed sites. Paraty and Ilha Grande join 21 other world heritage sites in Brazil, of which seven are natural and 14 are cultural. The country's list of sites includes Ouro Preto (MG), Olinda (PE), São Luís (MA), Cidade de Goiás (GO) and Salvador (BA), Brasilia Pilot Plan, Pantanal, Noronha and Atol das Rocas, Iguaçu National Park (PR), Cariocas Landscapes (RJ) and Cais do Valongo (RJ).
